Performative practices: Intimacy, Collectivity and Politics with Ophélie Mac coco from FATSABBATS for POC artists outside art schools.

Ophélie Mac coco

Ophélie Mac coco is an artist, teacher and lecturer in art schools (La Cambre, ISAC, ERG, 75, PARTS, etc.), social worker and activist. She is the founder and a member of the collective behind the FATSABBATS project, a cultural, inclusive and supportive space set up by and for LGBTQIA+ People of colour communities.

The workshop

As part of a 3-year cycle of collaboration between FATSABBATS and Cifas, Ophélie Mac coco brings together the different questions and mediums she uses and offers a workshop on performative practices aimed specifically at POC people not attending art school. Every module is an independent course within the cycle, application will be required every year if you wish to take part.

This first session will explore the convergences between the intimate and the political. The participants will work on the radicality of words, gestures and the power of the signifier. Through practical and theoretical teaching, Mac coco will share her performative practices, working methodologies and references to explore notions, codes and concepts.

The group will attempt to answer questions such as:

What is performance?

From which stories should we start?

How do you write a public action?

In front of whom? To say what?

What and who are our references?

What are the learning alternatives to higher education?

What about our experiences? What is their value and legitimacy?

How can we shape our need for change?

On the edge of contemporary art, the performing arts and institutions, let's wear our vulnerabilities, let's step outside the box, let's learn to take risks!

Performance* :

a radical action bearing the status of a work of art, relating to time, space, the body and the public, with a transformative impact.

*Teaser of a non-contractual definition
