A zine by bruna bonanno compiling research materials on pirate dramaturgy, created for Feral 2026
bruna bonanno produced SPY_BOOK(S)LET in the context of Feral Pirate, the 2026 edition of our annual festival during which we explored contemporary practices akin to piracy: hacking, citizen-led initiatives, forms of collective care, and artistic and ecological experiments.
“A yarn”, at sea, is the name for a thread, a rope, a cord, a net ; it is a story told whilst at sea – collective and solitary, disjointed, reinvented each time. At every knot, the threads pull, carry away, steal, invent. Between these knots, this booklet takes shape: a dramaturgical perspective that dips its feet – and its head – into the salt water, and which, in the shadow of a flag belonging to neither state nor nation, begins to spy, watch, keep vigil and spin… to persist in the middle of the sea.
bruna bonanno (Catania, 1997) is a playwright and political philosophy researcher focussing on dramaturgy practices engaged with radical democracy and salt water. She is co-founder of Salmastra, an interdisciplinary collective working with the fishing community in Sicily, and a member of PERLa – the Performance Epistemologies Research Lab at the IUAV University of Venice, where she is a teaching assistant in dramaturgy. She has recently been a visiting researcher at ARIA at the University of Antwerp, at the Public Exchange Bureau at Deakin University in Melbourne, at St John’s University with Steve Mentz in New York, and at S:PAM at Ghent University. Her latest dramaturgical project was recently awarded a prize at the Venice Theatre Biennale 2025.
